It’s hard to believe that we are already near the end of the school year! The children have grown and developed at a tremendous rate. Kindergarten students should be very proud of their learning accomplishments thus far.
Upcoming Field Trip –
June 10 our Kindergarten students will be going on a field trip to the Vancouver Zoo. It is through your fundraising efforts of the Bingo, luncheon and Loonie Toonie that this is possible. Total raised at the Bingo- $799.00 and at the Loonie Toonie/Luncheon - $415.00. The children and staff raise their hands to the parents and community for your support.
Zoo Animals and Insects
The students have begun an exciting time of learning about zoo animals throughout out May and June. They will be introduced to real zoo animals on our fieldtrip.
Early Literacy
During the zoo inquiry, students will be looking and listening to non-fiction and fiction books to learn about real zoo animals and insects.
Students are continuing with learning a letter and the sound associated with it every week. They love to come up with zoo animal or insect words that start with different letters.
We will be focusing on printing and reading simple sentences. Students will be learning how to print sentences with proper punctuation.
Some ways to support your child’s literacy development:
- The “Eye-Spy Game” - One person says, “I spy with my little eye something that starts with the Z sound.” The child tries to guess what the parent is thinking of.
- Rhyming games. While sitting at the dinner table, together with your child come up with as many rhyming words as you can.
- Play with your child. Talking with your child during playtime will help increase your child’s English vocabulary and of course they love the extra attention.
- Read daily together. Visit your public library to find some of your child’s favourites.
Early Numeracy
We will begin to explore measurement in Kindergarten. Children will measure objects in the classroom and school using standard and non-standard measuring tools.
They will measure volume using water and/or sand as well.
To support your child’s early mathematical development, here are a few suggestions that you can try at home.
- Make patterns with household objects. Eg. spoon, spoon, fork, spoon, spoon, fork,…..
- Sort toys into groups. Eg. stuffed toys, cars, dolls, etc.
- Make sets of 5 to 10 objects like marbles, toy cars, Lego bricks.
- Measure things at home using popsicle sticks, paper clips, Lego bricks, or wooden blocks. Eg. How many popsicle sticks long is a pillow or how many Lego bricks high is your child’s favourite stuffed toy

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEPTEMBER 2010
